Background Information

Washington State is applying for the second round of Race to the Top competitive grants with a deadline for applying of June 1.  We expect the official rollout to school districts and stakeholders to begin in late March or early April, though things could change. In an effort to get ahead of the rollout of Washington’s Race to the Top proposal, WEA is conducting five regional meetings around the state in mid March.  The meeting for WEA Eastern Washington will be shared with the Spokane Education Association. It will be held on Monday, March 15 from 10 – 12 am in the upstairs meeting room.

The meetings will be conducted by Jim Meadows and Karen Davis.  Jim has been the WEA representative on the RTTT Great Teachers and Leaders work team.  Karen has represented WEA on the RTTT Stakeholder Group. 

The two hour meetings will cover the initiatives in the RTTT proposal, how funding will work, the timeline for implementation should the State receive the grant, MOU language locals and districts should write and possible bargaining implications.  WEA will also seek your guidance and input as we possibly move to the next step in the RTTT process.

We are inviting you to stay after the meeting for lunch and a discussion of how the information will affect your district. The Council will pay for your sub and mileage costs so that as many locals as possible have this information in a direct and timely manner.
